FFP vs SFP Reticles

The focal plane determines whether a reticle’s apparent size changes with magnification. That behavior affects visibility, holdovers, and how the optic communicates information across its range.

First focal plane (FFP)

An FFP reticle is placed so it appears to grow as magnification increases and shrink as magnification decreases. Because the reticle and image scale together, angular references remain consistent at every magnification. A correctly designed FFP reticle can therefore support holds without requiring the scope to be set to one specific power.

The challenge is visibility at the ends of the range. Fine marks that are clear at high power can become too small at low power, while heavy geometry that is obvious at 1× can obscure detail when magnified. A good design has to solve both conditions as one system.

Second focal plane (SFP)

An SFP reticle appears to remain the same size while the target image changes. This can preserve a bold, familiar aiming point across the range. However, holdover and ranging references are normally accurate only at the magnification specified by the manufacturer—commonly the maximum setting.

Which one is better?

Neither focal plane is automatically better. FFP is useful when consistent angular references across changing magnification are central to the job. SFP can be useful when a steady apparent reticle size and a simple sight picture matter more than using scaled references at intermediate power.

Choose FFP when

  • You use reticle holds at more than one magnification.
  • You want the reticle and target to scale together.
  • You are comfortable evaluating low-power reticle visibility.
Choose SFP when

  • You primarily use the reticle center as the aiming reference.
  • You want a constant apparent reticle size.
  • You use calibrated holds at one known magnification.

Evaluate the design, not only the label

Focal plane is only one variable. Reticle geometry, illumination, glass, field of view, eye box, controls, and mechanical repeatability determine whether the finished optic works. The KLEAR K1 uses a first-focal-plane reticle within a 1–8×24 system.
