What a 3 MOA Dot Means

MOA is an angular measurement. A 3 MOA aiming dot covers approximately three inches at 100 yards, 1.5 inches at 50 yards, and three-quarters of an inch at 25 yards.

Angular size stays proportional

One minute of angle is about 1.047 inches at 100 yards. For practical comparisons, it is commonly treated as one inch at 100 yards. A 3 MOA dot therefore covers roughly three inches at that distance. Cut the distance in half and the covered area is cut in half; double the distance and it doubles.

Brightness changes perceived size

The LED’s angular specification does not change when brightness changes, but an over-bright dot can bloom and appear larger to the eye. Astigmatism, corrective lenses, window cleanliness, ambient light, and the brightness setting can all change how crisp the dot looks. Evaluate dot size at an appropriate brightness rather than at the highest setting indoors.

Speed and precision are connected

A larger apparent dot can be easy to acquire, while a smaller dot can cover less of a distant object. A 3 MOA dot sits between those extremes and is commonly used as a general-purpose balance. Window size, presentation, contrast, and visual focus still have a major effect on how quickly the dot is found.
